About Me

I’m Bryant Tan, a freelance coder working as an individual with many years’ experience, specialising in programming (C#.NET, C++, Java, and as of recently iPhone and Android apps) and PHP/MySQL website design. If you’d like to get in touch, I can be contacted at: btan (dot) freelance (at) gmail (dot) com.

I’m currently a student at Stanford University (having graduated from St Paul’s School [SPS]) and unashamedly love sciences, particularly physics, maths, and computing. I also spend a fair bit of time on outdoor pursuits such as rock climbing (weekly-ish), sailing (on-off), hiking (several times a year), camping (in summer) and cycling (just about whenever I can). I’m also a musician (having lead the SPS orchestra and (sometimes) playing the piano) and amateur photographer (shooting for the Stanford Daily and sharing some of my photos on Picasa). I can (kinda) juggle and do shotokan karate (I got my black-belt several years ago but sadly my current daily life makes training a rare occasion).

I think ultimately I’m a techie / scientist / mathmo sort of person who also likes lots of other things and consciously attempts to avoid becoming the stereotype (!) … Since fairly recently I seem to like working with PHP and MySQL building websites, and I co-created, amongst others, Dormlink with Alex Atallah, a social network startup (Stanford Daily article), and University Interviews with James Scott-Brown for sharing university interview experiences.

My existence online is spread thinly over various different websites, mostly under the alias arctanb. (Pretty much) everything is aggregated using Friendfeed, and I share links with Digg and bookmarks with Delicious. I also tweet, am LinkedIn and blog here.

I was accepted to Stanford, Harvard and Cambridge (Physical Natural Sciences at Corpus) but ultimately chose Stanford for its undergrad research opportunities and location in Silicon Valley. I hope to make the most of uni – after all, there’s a time and place for everything; it’s called college (Chef from South Park)!

After this I really have no idea what I’ll end up doing, though I’m probably going to major in physics. I was once considering finance but the really interesting stuff seems to be still happening in the tech world despite the end of the dot-com boom (I mean, just look at Google and Apple. And Twitter. And Facebook…) and I reckon nanotechnology and biotech are going to be big during my lifetime so I’m keeping my options open.
